Picture compliments of the Lucas County Public Library “Images in time”.
On April 25, 2007 the Lucas County Recorder Jeanine Perry was proud to record the deed transferring The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse ownership from The United States of America to the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society. After the deed was recorded it was presented to Sandy Bihn, President of The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society.
The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse was built in 1904 marking the entrance to the Maumee River Channel. This lighthouse replaced the Turtle Island Lighthouse that was located about 5 miles northeast of the mouth of the Maumee River. The Turtle Island Lighthouse was built in the 1830’s and by the 1900’s was not sufficient for the increased traffic on Lake Erie due to a recent dredging. On May 23, 1904 The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse was opened and the Turtle Island Lighthouse was decommissioned.
The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse is still active to this day and the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society has plans for renovations so that the lighthouse may be opened to the public.
