Homestead Exemption Program
Homestead Exemption Program
A recent change in Ohio law, which eliminates the income requirements, has broadened the qualifications for senior citizens to enroll in the homestead exemption that offers a break in property taxes.

The filing period for 2009 begins on January 5, 2009 and ends June 1, 2009. If you turn 65 ANYTIME during the calendar year, you are eligible to apply for the Homestead Exemption Program.

If you are a senior citizen or disabled person and meet the following criteria, you are encouraged to enroll in the homestead program.

1. Applicants who are 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled. Please note, it does not matter what date you turn 65, as long as you turn 65 some time during the year.
2. If disabled, the applicant is required to have their physician complete the certificate of disability form or submit a certificate from a state or federal agency.
3. Applicants must own and occupy their home or mobile home or have ownership interest in it (i.e. land contract, lease purchase).

If you missed the 2008 deadline and met the criteria, you may enroll for both 2008 and 2009. Applications must be turned in to the Auditor’s office by June 1, 2009. Please call the office to be placed on the mailing list. Applications will be mailed January 5, 2009. Applications will also be available at the Auditor’s office at One Government Center, Suite 600 or online after January 5, 2009. All forms must be signed and mailed to the Auditor’s office, no electronic files will be accepted. If you have any questions, please contact our Education and Outreach Department at 419.213.4406 or the Homestead Department at 419.213.4336.
